A few centuries 
          ago, eastern North America was covered by deciduous forests.Similar 
          forests once grew in western Europe and eastern Asia. Because of extensive 
          logging and land clearing, only scattered remnants of these
          original forests remain.
          While this Extension Note describes the historical forests of eastern 
          Ontario, forests throughout southern Ontario were shaped by similar 
          geological and climatic changes and the impact of settlement was virtually 
          the same.
